Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is a political figure in Afghanistan who has held several high-level positions in government. He was born in the Panjshir Valley of Afghanistan in 1960 to a well-known family in the area. He is from the ethnic group of Hazara and Pashtun. He received his education in Afghanistan and later went on to study medicine in India and then in USSR, where he graduated with a degree in medicine.
Dr. Abdullah began his political career as an advisor to Afghan President Ahmad Shah Massoud and played a key role in the resistance against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. He was appointed as the foreign minister in the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani in 2001 and served in that position until 2005.
He ran as the main opposition candidate in the 2009 and 2014 presidential elections. He lost to Hamid Karzai in the 2009 presidential election, but his campaign was widely considered to have been fair and transparent. He also lost to Ashraf Ghani in the 2014 presidential election and has also served as a member of parliament.
In 2014, after the controversy of the presidential election, he was appointed as the Chief Executive of the National Unity Government in Afghanistan and he is currently serving in that position. He has also been active in politics throughout the years of Taliban rule.
